Go For It When Conditions Are Favorable

Jack Nicklaus Golf Tip

Is there ever a time when the less skilled golfer should throw caution to the wind and play aggressively? I believe so. This opportunity comes on long par 4s and par 5s that combine generous fairways flanked by minimally penalizing hazards--say, light rough and shallow bunkers as opposed to out-of-bounds or water hazards.

A perfect example at the pro level is the par-5 15th hole at Augusta National. There, the reward for a big drive is a chance to reach the green in two for an eagle or birdie, while a miss-hit rarely costs more than laying up short of the lake fronting the green and pitching on. Thus, nearly the entire Masters field goes for broke from the 15th tee every year.

Whatever your handicap, do likewise whenever the odds favor you. Going for your biggest drive or a long second shot when you are unlikely to be severely penalized is sound strategy.

It's also a lot more fun than always playing conservatively.
